Why Your Offer Stopped Selling When Nothing About It Changed
TL;DR
Most advice about why your offer stopped selling points at the market. The problem is often on your side: you evolved and your offer stayed where you left it. Inside, how to run an energetic audit of your offer suite and tell an offer that needs fixing from one you have outgrown.
Years ago I had a client on a twenty hour a month OBM retainer, and she was high maintenance in the way that means you are doing thirty five hours of work and billing for twenty. My team handled the task level work. I did the strategy and the project management on top of it, and every single month we blew past that retainer.
So I went to her and told her I was happy to keep handling more of her requests, and that we would need to move her to a retainer that allowed for more hours. She got mad, fired me, and then went behind my back and tried to hire every contractor on my team. People I had spent years finding and developing.
That was the end of my OBM chapter. I want to be clear about why, because it had almost nothing to do with the firing. That offer was profitable. My clients loved the work and I was good at it. I still am, because I am organized and systematized in a way that made all of it easy for me. I did not even mind managing the team.
What I could not keep doing was pricing my work by the hour and then defending every minute of that time to someone who expected far more out of the engagement than she was paying for. I felt dread when I sat down to do the work, and the dread had nothing to do with whether the offer was any good. Plenty of OBMs make a very good living and love every part of it.
I recorded an episode of The Offer Mojo Show with Jenn Greiner, a therapist turned human design coach and the founder of Divine Vitality. She works with self aware, ambitious women on getting out of burnout cycles, strengthening their boundaries, and building something that does not cost them their nervous system. Jenn and I are both human design projectors, which may be why we hit it off as fast as we did. Two people who pay close attention to their energy, in large part because we have both learned what happens when we do not.
What she gave me in that conversation was language for something I had been watching in client after client without a good way to name it.
Why Does an Offer Stop Selling When Nothing About It Changed?
Your offer stopped selling because your own frequency moved and the offer has stayed where it was. The mismatch is real, your audience can feel it, and no amount of new copy will close a gap that is energetic rather than tactical.
Here is how Jenn puts it: the frequency of our offers, our business, what we are doing, no longer matches the frequency that we are functioning at. When there is that evolution, our offers need to meet us where we are at.
Her own version of this was a high ticket container she built and loved. The first time she talked about it publicly, someone signed up on the spot, and it ran well for a long stretch. Over time it grew from three months to four to six. Everything inside it shifted a little. Then it went quiet, and she could not work out why, because the offer was what her people needed.
She was working with a coach who uses human design and astrology, and that coach asked her a question I have not been able to stop thinking about since.
What is your vibration when you sit with this offer?
Here is what Jenn said out loud, to a coach, about the offer that had been her flagship: honestly, I guess I don't really care about it. I love it, it's everything, but I'm not meshing with it. It didn't really feel like me.
Nothing about that offer had gone wrong. She had outgrown it and had not noticed yet.
What I Look For When a Client Tells Me Their Offer Is Not Selling
I do not start with the pricing, the deliverables, or whether the market wants it. I start by reading their energy, because I refuse to help anyone build an offer that is misaligned.
How do they sound when they talk about delivering the thing? Are they excited about the model they are using, or are they using it because it works and because clients asked for it? Is this how they want to be delivering their expertise, and does the offer match what they want to be known for?
Most people will not say it outright. What I catch is underneath the words, and it shows up as flat enthusiasm or no momentum around something they should be lit up about.
I worked with a health coach who was doing one on one work. Her clients loved her, she was good at it, and she hated it. She would start a three month engagement and be checked out one month in, dreading the work. All she kept telling me was that she wanted to run retreats and group work.
So I looked at her and asked why she was not doing that. She had a whole story ready about why her clients wanted one on one and why she could not get rid of it. Underneath the story, she did not believe she could build her expertise around retreats. That belief was the resistance sitting between her and the offer she wanted to be delivering.
Emotional Energetics: Your Feelings Carry Frequency and So Does Your Offer
Emotional energetics is the idea that emotions carry measurable frequency, and that the emotional state you hold while you build, price, and deliver an offer becomes part of what your audience receives from it.
I got certified as a coach back in 2004, which makes me something of a veteran in this space. One of the certifications I earned then was in energy leadership, built on a model of seven levels of energy. The lower levels, the catabolic ones, are where depression and anger sit. The higher ones, the anabolic levels, are where you experience the benefits of higher frequencies. My whole job at the time was helping people shift levels, so when Jenn started talking about emotional energetics, I recognized it right away.
Jenn describes it this way: when we feel our feelings, when we talk about our feelings, there is a different frequency with them. There is a frequency chart of emotions where love sits at the top as the highest vibration, and sadness and depression sit lower. So we are honoring that emotions are energy. And in human design, the solar plexus center, the emotional space, is where we get to see the energy mechanics of our own emotions.
What that gives you is information about how your emotions move through you. Are you predisposed to being a bit moodier? Do you ride a fixed wave where your emotions shift whether you want them to or not? Or are you wide open to other people's emotions, riding whatever they are riding, aware of it or otherwise?
That last one matters more than most business owners realize. If you are open in that center, you are picking up your clients' emotional states during sessions and carrying them around afterward, and then wondering why you have nothing left for your own marketing.
Your Human Design Type Shapes the Offer You Can Sustain
Your energy type determines the shape of offer you can carry over years without burning down. It has less to say about what you teach and everything to say about how you package and deliver it.
I am a 2/4 emotional projector, which in practice means I am built for depth. My best work happens one on one, in longer layered engagements where there is room for the real material to surface. Any time I ignore that and try to deliver in a format that was not designed for me, it bites me.
A projector's aura is focused and penetrating. We work best one on one. When we want to scale, we cannot just do more of the one on one work, because we only have so much energy and so much room in the calendar. So you look at what is conducive to your aura and your type, and you build in a way that lets you show up and follow your strategy.
Generators need an offer that gets a full body yes from the sacral, and they need to stay with that one thing rather than splitting off in five directions. The energy is there for sustained work when the work is genuinely responded to.
Manifestors need room to initiate and then real rest, because they run in creative cycles rather than steady weekly output. An offer that demands the same output every week will grind them down.
Manifesting generators need an offer with enough flex in it that they can shift it without dismantling the whole business.
I said this on the episode and I will say it again here. When you create too many offers, your energy gets split, and your audience gets confused. Those two things happen together, and the second one is the part that shows up in your revenue.
The Energetic Audit: Offers You Are Not Delivering Still Cost You
An energetic audit is a review of everything you are still offering, judged by what it costs you to keep rather than by what it earns. The surprising part is how much energy goes to offers nobody is even buying.
Jenn ran one on her own business this year. Here is what she found: she had a bunch of passive offer income, so those offers were not taking her time or energy in any obvious way. But they were still in her offer suite, and they were still taking energy from her. She kept saying, nobody is buying this, nobody is buying that, but I want it available. When she cleaned them out and took them off her website, she felt lighter. Clients started coming in from other avenues.
Offers you are not even delivering can still cost you something. That was the part I had to sit with.
My own suite is down to two doors. You either work with yourself inside the OfferMojo Squad, or you work with me one on one in the deep work. There are no other options, and that is deliberate.
People tell me all the time what I should add. You should run a mastermind. You should do a group program. You should have a membership. I know who I am, I know what works for me, and I know what my clients want from me, so I have gotten good at filtering those out before they turn into something I have to scrap later.
The most recent thing I cut was website development. It used to be part of what I offered and it is no longer anywhere on my public site. Could I still do it with my team for the right client? Yes, and I have. But there are a thousand website developers out there. That is not the lane I want to be known for, and I do not want to be known as a marketing agency.
Quick Diagnostic: Have You Outgrown Your Offer?
If you are not sure whether your offer needs fixing or retiring, use this to check.
| Question | Yes | No |
|---|---|---|
| Do you feel dread or heaviness before delivering it? | ||
| Has it gone quiet without anything about the market changing? | ||
| Are you keeping it because clients asked for it? | ||
| Would you feel relief if you took it off your website tomorrow? | ||
| Does it reflect what you want to be known for in two years? | ||
| Are there offers in your suite nobody has bought in six months? | ||
| Do you talk about it with less energy than you talk about your other work? | ||
| Have you changed as a person since you built it? |
More yes answers than no is a signal worth sitting with. It does not always mean the offer is bad. More often it means you have moved and it has not.
We Override Our Own Boundaries for Money
We override our boundaries for money, most of the time. The income goal for the month makes a misaligned client look like a reasonable trade, and the cost of that decision shows up long after the payment clears.
Jenn has a friend who does a version of this on repeat with one specific human design type. Her friend has concluded time and time again, year after year, that she does not work well with manifesting generators. And she does not follow that boundary. She will tell Jenn she is getting a new client, and Jenn will ask what their human design is.
Sometimes it plays out as a client who completes the contract and then says she is just not happy with it. Sometimes it is a client who rebrands halfway through and expects the whole thing redone outside the original agreement. Once it went as far as a lawyer and a demand for a refund.
What her friend said afterward was that she knew it was not aligned and did it anyway.
Jenn named the part of this that stings. If you are trying to meet your income for the month, you might overlook and override your boundaries so you can get that income. But many times when you look back on it, you would have been fine without it. You should have said no, because it was not worth the income.
I have my own version of that story, and so does every experienced business owner I know. The pattern repeats. The intuition arrives on time. We hear it. We proceed anyway.
What Staying in a Misaligned Offer Really Costs You
It costs you your capacity, and capacity is the thing your whole business runs on. Everything else you lose is downstream of that.
The first cost is delivery. You show up to sessions with less presence, and your clients get a version of you that is competent on paper and checked out underneath. They may never name it. They feel it, and it affects their results, which affects your testimonials, which affects your next round of sales.
The second cost is your marketing. When you are promoting something you have outgrown, it shows up in your copy. Your enthusiasm thins. Your emails go out later. You start avoiding the very content that would sell the thing, which looks like a discipline problem and is closer to a body refusing to lie for you.
The third cost is opportunity. This is the one Jenn's audit made obvious to me. While that offer sits there taking up room, the thing that wants to come in has nowhere to land. She cleared out passive offers that were not costing her time in any measurable way, and clients arrived through other doors. We have to create the space so that new invitations, and new things that use our energy, can come in.
The last cost is the one I lived. If you are not aligned with your offer suite on an energetic level, you reach burnout. It might hold for a while. I have been there, I have done it, and I am proof that it happens.
I asked Jenn at the end of the episode what she most wants ambitious business owners to understand about the relationship between their business success and their nervous system. Her answer was that they are one and the same. When our nervous system is on the fritz, we cannot show up in our business. We cannot be at that highest vibration. We cannot be focused and present. And that emotional solar plexus in human design is where our nervous system lives.
Frequently Asked Questions About Outgrowing Your Offer
Why did my offer stop selling when nothing about it changed?
Because something did change: you. Most advice about a slow offer points at the market, the messaging, or the economy, and sometimes that is the answer. But if your conversion dropped without a matching shift in your audience or your visibility, look at your own relationship with the offer first. When you evolve and the offer stays put, the gap shows up in how you talk about it, how often you promote it, and how much conviction you carry into a sales conversation.
How do I know if I have outgrown my offer or if it just needs better marketing?
Check your body before you check your funnel. If you feel dread, flatness, or relief at the thought of retiring it, that is an alignment problem and no amount of new copy will resolve it. If you feel genuine excitement about the offer and the numbers are still soft, that is a marketing problem worth solving. The two require different work, and running a messaging overhaul on an offer you have outgrown wastes months.
What is an energetic audit of an offer suite?
It is a review of every offer you have live, scored by what it costs you rather than what it earns. You look at each one and ask how you feel when you imagine delivering it, whether you would be relieved to remove it, and what it takes from you to keep it listed. Passive offers count. Jenn Greiner found that offers generating income without taking her time were still draining her by existing on her website, and removing them freed up room for new work.
Should I retire an offer that is still profitable?
Sometimes, yes. This is one of the hardest calls you will make, because a profitable offer with happy clients does not look like a problem from the outside. The question is whether you can sustain delivering it at the quality you want for the next two years. If the honest answer is no, you are choosing between retiring it now on your terms or burning out and retiring it later on worse ones.
What is emotional energetics in human design?
Emotional energetics is the understanding that emotions carry frequency, and that human design shows you the mechanics of how your particular emotions move. The solar plexus center is the emotional center in the human design chart. If it is defined, you ride a fixed emotional wave regardless of circumstance. If it is undefined, you take in and amplify other people's emotional states, which matters a great deal if you spend your days in client sessions.
Does my human design type affect what kind of offer I should sell?
It affects how you package and deliver it more than what you teach. Projectors work best in focused one on one depth and need care when scaling. Generators sustain one thing well when the work gets a full body yes from the sacral. Manifestors need cycles of initiation and real rest. Manifesting generators need flexibility built into the structure. Building an offer that fights your type is possible, and it is expensive over time.
Why do I keep saying yes to clients I know are not a fit?
Almost always because of a revenue number. The income goal for the month makes a misaligned client look like a reasonable trade, and the intuition that flagged the problem gets overridden in the moment. Looking back, most business owners find they would have been fine without that money, and the cost of the engagement outweighed what it paid. Tracking these decisions for six months is usually enough to break the pattern.
Can I fix a misaligned offer or do I have to start over?
Often you can adjust it, and the change is usually structural rather than topical. Jenn kept the core of her high ticket container and changed how she related to it, which shifted what it attracted. The subject matter you are known for is often still right. What needs to change is the format, the length, the delivery model, or the type of client it is built for.
