When stretching out of your comfort zone gives your high-achieving client a sexy construction management website on Squarespace, why wouldn’t you do it?

KMG Solutions Inc

Last year we worked with the highly accomplished Kat Welniak, a client-first construction manager who has worked with some major brands like Nike, Vera Bradley, and Victoria’s Secret–to name a few. Kat believes in living large, and this is reflected in every project she ever does.

From successfully opening a store during a hurricane to renovating a duck pond housing 4 swans, over 150 Japanese Koi fish, 100+ uninvited ducks, and 50+ unwanted Canadian geese!– Kat gives her all to her clients. Kind of like us!

When Kat approached On a Mission Brands about working on her brand and 10-page+ website, we were a little hesitant.  We had never worked in her niche before. But as someone who doesn’t back down from a challenge–just like Kat–we decided to dive headfirst into this project.

And boy are we glad we did!

From getting to learn about a completely new niche to discovering Kat’s depth of involvement in her clients’ projects to unlocking new Squarespace functions, this project was huge for us.

Kat wanted her website to feel ‘sexy’, and we wanted to give her that. We also wanted her new site to be inviting and reflect her can-do attitude, passion for every project she takes on, and fun personality.

Here’s what went into launching her website

Our to-do list

  • Analyze Kat’s existing website and resources to understand her brand and business, coming up with the best way to showcase Kat’s expertise and passion for work.

  • Come up with brand colors and design elements that Kat loved, but were also appropriate for the niche.

  • Determine the flow and layout of Kat's website based on how her potential clients and collaborators would view it and interact with it.

  • Write strategic copy for her home page, about page, tenant coordination page, development page, and project pages. This included editing her client testimonials to be more reader-friendly.

  • Create an on-brand, easy to navigate, sexy, SEO-optimized Squarespace website that both Kat and her ideal humans love. And while we were at it–figure out how to include elements from a WordPress website Kat loved into her Squarespace site, which had different functionalities.

Our Process

  • After the initial clarity call, Kat filled out our branding and offer questionnaires.

  • Based on her answers, we developed a strategic website layout and determined which pages to prioritize based on her current needs.

  • Once the site map was approved, we started working on the copy for her website. But before that, our copywriter spent weeks immersed in various construction management blogs and Facebook groups to ensure she captured the niche correctly.

  • We also had multiple calls with Kat during the entire process, during which we determined her very specific needs for her website, her unique voice, and the industry standards (read…expectations)for a website in construction.

  • We worked on the copy for one page at a time, and only when Kat was completely happy with the results did we move on to the next.

  • Simultaneously, we also worked on Kat’s branding and colors. Since Kat didn’t want her logo changed at all, we worked around it. We were able to incorporate her favorite color–Orange–as an accent color, which really made her website pop. To balance it out–and to indicate professionalism, reliability and security–we brought in blue.

  • Once the copy and colors were finalized, we moved on to the design phase of the website.

  • Our website designer really challenged herself to find creative solutions in Squarespace that would give Kat specific elements she loved. Like the swirling banner on the homepage, the animated backgrounds, and more.

  • Lori also juggled various aspects of project management to ensure her team had everything they needed to make this project successful without disrupting Kat’s busy schedule. Think…multiple construction projects to sort, define, and present, dozens of images to sift through, coordinating with Kat and the team, and more..

Here’s how her website looked before we entered the picture

What we did differently from her previous website

  • Used brand colors that represented who Kat really is, as she’s the face of her business.

  • Made the website clear and easy to navigate.

  • Modified the copy to sound professional, informative, and convincing while, at the same time, reflecting Kat’s personality. One of the things we did was include fun facts about Kat and her projects.

  • Went through dozens of low resolution images to select ones that best represented Kat’s work and then optimized them for visuals, speed, and SEO.

  • Introduced fun elements in her design, like animated banners and backgrounds to reflect Kat’s belief in living big.

The result

A gorgeous Squarespace website that both Kat and her clients loved!
